unfinished

  1. first off: i still love that dragonfly. although it seems really organic for a mechanical vehicle. but for all i know that how it works. i just wish there was more evidence of mechanics. right now it looks like a really cool chinese dragonfly beast. Im liking the changes you're making to the antlion as well. more mechanical and less beast. can't wait to see the final rendition.

  2. You really nailed getting your dragonfly's wings to make sense as a functional design. Plus you were able to include that leafy vein pattern the book mentioned without drowning out the robotic aspect of the anatomy. I love those fierce claws on the antlion, Your structure seems to really make solid sense, I can see all the parts fitting together perfectly.

  3. I love the colors on your dragonfly. They're nice and bright but not super neon. I also love the movement you get with the wings, and the orange background is a nice tough and really sets off the color of the dragonfly. I like the change that you made to your ant lion, because now it definitely feels more mechanical, but still looks partly organic too.
You've probably gotten this already from other people, but one thing I suggest is maybe making your dragonfly a little more mechanical like your ant lion is (maybe in the wings or the back end of the body). The face of the dragonfly is nice, though.

  4. Good work. My first impression of the dragonfly is that it looks very sinister. The furious flapping in the wings adds to the intensity of the piece. My second impression is that the dragonfly looks more alien then mechanical. I like your textures for the exoskeleton it makes the plating feel more organic then metallic, which i think is refreshing since most of us gave our insects metal plating. Thoughts for improvement would be to make the dragonfly look a little more mechanical.

  5. I will agree that the dragonfly is the better design. Also that wing flapping effect is really nice. I think the reason it looks so sinister is because of the combination of the little arms it has, the hunchback look, and the teeth being as prominent as they are. Its hands are kind of making it look silly. If you replaced them with some kind of pointed end, they could be something like single claws or blades, and that would look more bug-like.

The antlion is running into some problems design-wise. I guess the first thing would be that it only has 4 legs, which, depending on if we're going for anatomical correctness, would either be a non-issue or very important. Second thing is that the only cue we have that this is a bad guy is his neck and head. Everything else is round and square, which by themselves don't really convey danger. Try experimenting with different main body shapes, and you'll be able to bring the design together more. Since that body is the biggest shape on the creature, it's your first and best cue as to its demeanor. I'm also confused as to what exactly is going on in a few spots. Are those neck teeth? Can they move also? What purpose do they serve? Also, does it have a tail? Why?
